KINEMATIK is an imagery-based performance piece created by Vel Z, which stems from the combination of the objects KI, NE, MA and TIK, developed from the art films Kinematik I (2023), Kinematik II (2024), Kinematik III (2025) and Kinematik IV (2026).
The installation component of the project, which is anchored in each of the syllables of the final work’s title, will consist of vertical images printed on metal and displayed on dedicated stands in equal numbers per film, the four source films viewable on an equal number of tablets, and eight artist’s books and their respective boxes. The performance component, co-directed by Luís Castro, will be carried out by four mystery performers who will blend invisibly into their respective installations.
Drawing on photographs taken by the artist, as well as items from the natural history collections of the Karnart Cabinet of Curiosities, and footage he filmed himself, Vel Z has developed – in a studio and laboratory setting, using a variety of technologies – a one-man show featuring hybrid objects that bridge the worlds of cinema and painting, evoking a whole host of metaphors and narratives that focus on the naked body, distortion, the grotesque.
